2024.33 : Toothpick Church

Outside Mexico City Circa 2017

Your job as an artist is to transcend technique.

— Yo-Yo Ma

Those who elevate craft to art are endlessly fascinating. The craftsman in this photo, confidently holding his toothpick, surveys the weathered stone and stained glass of the old church, visualizing how his years of experience and training will be applied to the most important building in his town. He knows he’s the right man for the job, perhaps because this church has stood in his town—and his life—for generations. And when it’s all done, so will everyone else—though none of them, outside his colleagues, friends, and family, will know his name.

And now… know the photograph.
